if you elect obama for the next four years, there will be no better than the past four years. i happen to believe that is true, but not very inspiring. it is hard to blame the guy. he wants to get reelected with a pretty narrow cast approach to democratic and independent constituencies. i do not think we will get the kind of framing you would like. i am a little less pessimistic. i do think reality matters. and we will hit a cliff and all kinds of ways. the fed cannot keep printing money and expecting the world to take it or buy treasury notes to fund trillion dollar deficits forever. the economy is slow and going into another dip. i actually think the next president will have a moment between november 7, and i do not know, this summer or fall of 2013 to do a lot. i would bet there is a huge legislative agenda in 2013. i did not really by the gridlock argument. if obama gets reelected, evil have a mandate basically -- he will have a mandate basically the lesser version of bowel- simpson. if romney wins, he will have a mandate for some version of the right and budget, probably

obama married me. i just want you to know, next year we will not be celebrating it in front of 40 million people. four years ago we went through the worst financial crisis since the great depression. many jobs were lost. the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. because of the resilience and determination of the american people, we have begun to fight our way back. over the last 30 months, we have seen five million jobs in the private sector created. the auto industry has come roaring back. housing has begun to rise. the question tonight is not where we have been, but where we are going. governor romney has a perspective that says, if we cut taxes, skew toward the wealthy, and roll back regulations we will be better off. i have a different view. i think we have to invest in education and training. i think it is important for us to develop new sources of energy here in america, that we change our tax code to make sure we are helping small businesses and companies here in the united states. that we

when president obama was elected, the automobile industry was in a crisis. you remember the famous congressional hearing in which three c zero's of flu and in separate planes. that is probably the part everyone remembers. president bush put about $17.5 billion into chrysler and general motors to kind of tide them over. it was a very tough time to have a crisis like this. i believe that president bush did the right thing and we can come back to that later in the conversation. president obama was confronted. these companies had been given a small amount of money to help it. it would be exhausted by 2009. president obama had tough decisions to make, whether to help the industry or not. i was asked as the head of the automobile taskforce. there was 15 people brought in from outside of government. most of them from the financial world. we essentially attacked the problem as a private equity exercise in part. could the government invest enough money and expect to get it back? could these companies become viable with restructuring? if we presented those issues to t
